Tense in English – কালের ব্যবহার

In English grammar, tense tells us when an action takes place: past, present or future.
ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণে, tense (কাল) বলে দেয় একটি কাজ কখন হয়: অতীতে, বর্তমান না ভবিষ্যতে।

Types of Tense – Tense-এর প্রকারভেদ

There are three main types of tense in English grammar. Each tense shows the time of action.
ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণে মোট তিন ধরনের Tense রয়েছে। প্রতিটি Tense ক্রিয়ার সময় বোঝায়।

1. Present Tense – বর্তমান কাল
   যখন কোনো কাজ বর্তমানে ঘটে বা ঘটছে।
2. Past Tense – অতীত কাল
   যখন কোনো কাজ অতীতে ঘটেছিল।
3. Future Tense – ভবিষ্যৎ কাল
   যখন কোনো কাজ ভবিষ্যতে ঘটবে।

1. Present Tense (বর্তমান কাল)

Used for actions happening now, habitual actions, and general truths.
(বর্তমানে যা ঘটছে, নিয়মিত যা হয়, ও সাধারণ সত্য বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)

• Simple Present: I eat breakfast every day. – আমি প্রতিদিন নাস্তা খাই।
• Present Continuous: She is reading a book now. – সে এখন একটি বই পড়ছে।
• Present Perfect: They have visited the museum. – তারা যাদুঘর পরিদর্শন করেছে।
• Present Perfect Continuous: I have been studying for two hours. – আমি দুই ঘণ্টা ধরে পড়াশোনা করছি।

2. Past Tense (অতীত কাল)

Describes actions that happened before now.
(এটি এমন কাজ বোঝায় যা এখন থেকে আগেই ঘটেছে।)

• Simple Past: He walked to school yesterday. – সে গতকাল স্কুলে হেঁটেছিল।
• Past Continuous: They were playing when it rained. – বৃষ্টি হলে তারা খেলছিল।
• Past Perfect: She had left before you came. – তুমি আসার আগে সে চলে গিয়েছিল।
• Past Perfect Continuous: We had been waiting by the station. – আমরা স্টেশনের কাছে অপেক্ষা করছিলাম।

3. Future Tense (ভবিষ্যৎ কাল)

Used for actions that will happen later.
(ভবিষ্যতে যা হবে, তা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)

• Simple Future: I will go to Dhaka tomorrow. – আমি আগামীকাল ঢাকায় যাব।
• Future Continuous: She will be working at 5 PM. – বিকেল ৫টায় সে কাজ করছে থাকবে।
• Future Perfect: By then they will have arrived. – তখন তারা পৌঁছে যাবে।
• Future Perfect Continuous: He will have been studying for three hours by then. – তখন সে তিন ঘণ্টা ধরে পড়াশোনা করছে থাকবে।

• She was cooking when I arrived.
  আমি পৌঁছানোর সময় সে রান্না করছিল।
• They have completed their homework.
  তারা তাদের গৃহকর্ম শেষ করেছে।
• We will travel to the hills next week.
  আমরা আগামী সপ্তাহে পাহাড়ে যাব।
• He will have been working all day by 6 PM.
  বিকেল ৬টার মধ্যে সে সারাদিন কাজ করেই থাকবে।
