Participle কী? | Present & Past Participle (বাংলায়)

ইংরেজি Grammar-এ Participle একটি খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়। অনেক learner-ই বুঝতে পারেন না যে Verb + ing বা Verb-এর 3rd form সবসময় tense বোঝায় না।

যখন Verb কোনো sentence-এ Adjective-এর মতো কাজ করে, তখন তাকে বলা হয় Participle।

Participle কী?

Participle হলো Verb-এর এমন একটি form, যা Verb হয়েও sentence-এ Adjective হিসেবে কাজ করে।

Definition:
A participle is a form of a verb that works as an adjective.

Participle noun-কে describe করে, মানে noun-এর গুণ বা অবস্থা বোঝায়।

Participle কত প্রকার?

মূলত Participle দুই প্রকার:

• Present Participle
• Past Participle

Present Participle কী?

Verb + ing form যখন কোনো noun-কে describe করে, তখন সেটি Present Participle।

Structure: Verb + ing

Examples:

• The crying baby is hungry. (কাঁদতে থাকা শিশুটি ক্ষুধার্ত।)
• I saw a running dog. (আমি একটি দৌড়াতে থাকা কুকুর দেখেছি।)
• The burning candle is bright. (জ্বলতে থাকা মোমবাতিটি উজ্জ্বল।)

এখানে crying, running, burning noun-কে describe করছে। তাই এগুলো tense নয়, Present Participle।

Past Participle কী?

Verb-এর 3rd form যখন noun-কে describe করে, তখন তাকে বলা হয় Past Participle।

Structure: V3 (broken, done, written)

Examples:

• A broken chair is useless. (ভাঙা চেয়ারটি অকেজো।)
• The written letter is on the table. (লেখা চিঠিটি টেবিলে আছে।)
• The injured man was taken to hospital. (আহত লোকটিকে হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়েছে।)

Present vs Past Participle (Difference)

Participle Phrase কী?

যখন Participle-এর সাথে আরও কিছু word যুক্ত হয়, তখন সেটাকে বলে Participle Phrase।

Examples:

• Running fast, he missed the bus.
• Broken by the storm, the tree fell down.

Common Mistakes

• I saw a cry baby ✔ I saw a crying baby
• A break chair ✔ A broken chair
• The man is injured car ✔ The injured man
